THE MOUNTAIN WAITS
A visual journey across Japan tracing identity, motion, and the quiet work of becoming
PAC Studio + Gallery and Julie Mostafa are pleased to present The Mountain Waits, a new exhibition by Genesis, opening November 22, 2025 and running through January 17, 2026 at 193 Monticello Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07304. The exhibition features a selection of film photographs and a large-scale plywood-mounted Constellation, expanding the artist’s sequencing practice into a more spatial, route-based form of narrative. We bring creativity and expertise to everything we do.
The Mountain Waits continues the evolution of Genesis’s sequencing approach first explored through The Cloud, a multi-image piece from his previous exhibition Trials and Errors. While The Cloud shifted in its arrangement each time it was shown, the Constellation marks a more grounded structure. Its anchors are fixed, giving the piece an established form while still allowing viewers to navigate their own pathways through it. The shift mirrors the move from the internal journey of Trials and Errors to an external one shaped by location and travel.
The photographs emerged from moments where experiencing and documenting met in real time—not from a planned effort to gather work. Shot across trains, parks, neighborhoods, and the everyday edges of Japan, the images reflect movement and solitude rather than grand destinations. They are arranged into pocket constellations that hold small emotional terrains. Visitors can approach the piece from any direction, creating their own way of reading it.
At the center is the mountain—not as a destination but as a witness. It remains whether or not we meet it, suggesting that the routes we take toward it reveal more than the arrival itself.
Together, these constellations form a visual roadmap that mirrors the layered and nonlinear way the artist experienced Japan: wandering, open, and shaped by what was found along the way.
